Sexual Assault cases can be some of the most difficult cases to investigate and prosecute. A key witness may be a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE). This training is designed to explain the role of SANE; what is involved in a SANE’s interview and examination and an understanding of the SANE report. This course will also cover prepping a SANE to testify at trial and expectations and limitations of their testimony. This presentation will also analyze the SANE as a expert following the Minnesota Supreme Court’s decision in State v. Obeta.
3:15-5:15 Report Writing, Testifying & Making a Record
(Steve Pfaffe, The Honorable Joanne Smith, Kazou Yang and Linda Horgan)
The successful resolution of cases in the criminal justice system relies heavily on the quality of both written reports and the testimony based on those reports. Judges, prosecutors and peace officers must all work together to endure that the information in the reports is both accurately recorded and succinctly delivered through testimony. This process becomes eminently more difficult when either suspects or victims need an interpreter. "The Art of Making the Record" is a presentation designed to instruct lawyers and witnesses in the importance of the record and promotes understanding of the rules and guidelines necessary for the creation and protection of an accurate and usable record in the courtroom setting.
